CATCH · HANDOFF · CLEANUPFINISHING THE FISHING DAY
Decide what you intend to release or keep, then work through the handling and handoffs. If keeping fish, know who will collect each share, how it travels and where it reaches suitable storage before planning the meal.
ARRANGE THE JOBS BEFORE FISHING
If releasing fish, prepare the handling, unhooking and return appropriate to the species and setting. If hoping to keep fish, use the rule and advisory guides before deciding what to retain, then agree who handles, prepares and receives the catch. Taking fish home is optional; it needs a workable use and storage plan.
Ask what will be ready at collection: whole fish, fillets or other portions, chilled or frozen. A fillet is a piece of flesh cut from a fish. Cleaning, packing and freezing are different services and may finish at different times. Keep the ready time and place with the return journey.
The cold chain means keeping seafood appropriately chilled through storage and each handoff. The boat’s fish storage and a cooler for the drive home are different arrangements. For a guided or self-arranged outing, assign the container, cooling and next storage rather than assuming the previous person supplies the next stage.

For example, one share may go straight home while another stays overnight before a flight. Those need separate route and storage arrangements, even if both came from the same boat. Resolve the room or carrier arrangements before paying for packing or freezing.
Use the linked food guidance for storage, thawing and cooking, and pass the origin and relevant advisory source to anyone receiving fish. Before leaving the fishing place, collect loose line, hooks and rubbish and account for the gear.
