Casting sends the presentation away from the boat; a vertical approach works more directly below or beside it. In either case, lure depth and bottom depth are separate. Learn how the guide controls the presentation rather than copying the depth displayed on a screen.

Familiar local names

Check whether the service targets crappie specifically or includes it in a general list of fish that might be encountered.

What the trip involves

Ask whether the plan is based on casting, vertical presentations or another method, whether live bait or artificial lures are used, and whether you will receive instruction. A depth-focused trip can be active and technical; it is not simply dropping a line into the deepest part of the lake.

Fish can hold above the bottom. Ask a guide to explain bottom depth, fish depth and lure depth separately. That distinction is especially useful when learning from sonar rather than following a fixed number from an old fishing report.
