Ask the right questions before a bass, crappie or other lake outing.

Get the exact offering

Confirm the target species, time slot and meeting point. A guide may operate on more than one reservoir. The business address is not automatically the ramp, and a base price for four is not necessarily a maximum capacity of four.

Describe your party

Tell the operator the number of people, the experience level and any boarding or comfort needs. Ask how much casting or equipment handling is expected. Confirm seating, shade, restrooms nearby and what happens if the party needs to return early.

Know the money details

Write down the price for your actual party, extra-person charges, fuel/bait treatment, gear, cleaning if offered, deposit and cancellation policy. If comparing morning and afternoon offerings, compare actual durations and start times rather than assuming a generic “half day.”

Make a small equipment plan

Ask what the guide supplies. Pack weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, food/drinks as instructed and personal essentials. Check current licensing and waterbody-specific rules. Border waters need the exact jurisdiction confirmed rather than an assumption based on where you slept.
