Your license and the captain’s permits are different

Separate personal obligations from the operator and vessel’s authority to run the trip.

A guest buying a fishing license and a business operating a charter are answering different questions. Do not buy an operator permit simply because a general offshore article mentions one, and do not assume the captain’s credentials automatically resolve every guest obligation.

Start with the personal outing

Check the responsible agency’s current passenger licensing information using your age, residency, dates, actual water and guided/independent status. If the weekend includes independent fishing, ask whether the proposed charter-passenger privilege applies to that separate activity. The buying guide starts with the official source.

Ask about the exact commercial product

The operator’s guide license and relevant vessel/fishery permits belong in the provider’s compliance process. LDWF has a for-hire licensing page; NOAA provides separate federal fishery and highly migratory species permit information. Which applies depends on the actual operation and target.

For your inquiry, give the intended trip and ask the provider to confirm the passenger requirements and relevant operating category. A company’s boat photograph does not establish its permits, and a website listing is not our certification of compliance.

Retention and landing add another question
